Intercom alternative
Is there a cheaper alternative to Intercom?
The complaint that shows up most in indie-hacker and small-team forums isn't about Intercom's features — it's the bill after the intro rate ends. As of September 2026, Intercom's Essential plan is listed at $29/seat/month on Intercom's own pricing page (Verified 2026-09-09), and usage-based add-ons can push that further. Scitor charges $0 / $9 / $19/month flat, for the whole team.
Who Intercom is genuinely a good fit for
Intercom is built around live chat, in-product messaging, and marketing-adjacent features like product tours and outbound campaigns — not just ticketing. If your support strategy depends on real-time chat with visitors on your site, or you're already using Intercom for onboarding and marketing messaging, that breadth is worth paying for. Scitor doesn't replicate it: no product tours, no in-app marketing messages, and no human-staffed chat surface for visitors (Enterprise's optional AI widget, covered below, answers from docs — it isn't onboarding or marketing messaging).
Where Scitor fits differently
On Free and Pro, Scitor handles one channel — email and web-form submissions — turning them into GitHub Issues in a repository you control. There's no seat count to negotiate and no usage tier to watch: $0 / $9 / $19/month, whatever your team size, with AI triage (sentiment, category, suggested priority) included from the $9/month Pro plan.
What you'd actually lose by switching
Scitor has no human-staffed live chat, at any plan — if visitors expect to message a person in real time from your site, that capability goes away entirely, not just changes shape. The Enterprise plan does include an optional AI chat widget that answers from your docs and escalates to a ticket when it can't, but that's a documentation bot, not real-time chat with a person. Product tours, in-app messages, and Intercom's own automation/bot builder also have no Scitor equivalent. Existing Intercom conversation history stays in Intercom; there's no importer.
Is Scitor the right Intercom alternative for you?
An honest breakdown, not a sales pitch.
Switch if:
- Your team uses GitHub daily
- Your support is primarily email-based
- You are a small SaaS or dev tool company
- You are tired of paying per-agent
- You want AI that understands your codebase
- You don't rely on live chat or in-app messaging
Stay on Intercom if:
- You need phone or live chat
- You handle support across social media
- You have 50+ agents
- Your team does not use GitHub
- You use product tours or in-app marketing messages

Questions people ask before switching
- Is there a free or cheaper alternative to Intercom?
- Scitor's Free plan costs $0/month with unlimited inbound email and 100 outbound emails/month; Pro is $9/month flat for the whole team. That's a fundamentally different pricing model than Intercom's per-seat pricing — compare the actual numbers on our pricing page rather than assuming, since Intercom's plans include capabilities (live chat, product tours) Scitor doesn't have.
- Why did my Intercom bill go up so much after the intro rate?
- That's a billing-model question specific to Intercom's own pricing structure — we can't speak to their pricing decisions. What we can say is that Scitor's three plans ($0/$9/$19/month) are flat regardless of team size or usage tier, so there's no seat count or usage-based line item that changes month to month.
- Does Scitor have live chat like Intercom?
- Not human-staffed live chat, on any plan. Email and embeddable-web-form submissions become GitHub Issues, which is one way a ticket gets created. Scitor's Enterprise plan separately offers an optional AI chat widget that answers from your docs and can escalate to a ticket when it can't — but that's a documentation bot, not real-time chat with a person. If human-staffed live chat is a requirement, Intercom is the better choice.
- How does the AI handle our customer data?
- We never train on it. AI features are paid-plan only and optional — you can disable them with ai: { enabled: false } in scitor.yaml. Each AI call runs on Cloudflare Workers AI, processed at whichever Cloudflare location is handling the request rather than a fixed or guaranteed region, sends a bounded slice of context (the ticket plus a handful of retrieved knowledge-base excerpts and the agent's instruction), and the request body is not retained. See scitor.io/ai for the full transparency page, or scitor.io/security for data handling overall.
